NXNE 2012: Flaming Lips

|Many small colourful balloons to go with the one big human bubble.

The Flaming Lips headlined Saturday night’s free NXNE Dundas Square showcase this year. Crowds were ample as usual, although subdued by the news of Radiohead’s stage collapse earlier in the day. The band played a beautiful Radiohead cover as a dedication to the tragedy, made  absurd by the CP24 news coverage of the collapse playing silently behind the stage on a giant screen which was wholly unconnected to the performance.

The concert began with Wayne Coyne giving birth to himself as a bubble boy – getting inside one of the giant balloons that the band typically bounce through the audience during recent performances. The effect inspired awe but was unfortunately a little too reminiscent of the unopening pod scene from Spinal Tap.
